Theatre
Arts for Kids
– An introductory class for the very young student in
theatre, music and dance. This is a fun class that will
improve the student’s ability to get in front of a stage
with confidence and self assurance. At this basic level
more emphasis will be on music and dance. Students will
start to understand various emotions and play those
emotions out on stage in a safe environment.
Theatre
Arts Tweens –The
next step from the kids theatre arts class, students in
the tween class learn theatre, music, dance, and, of
course, performance in a higher level. Their production is
longer in length, more difficult in music and the dance
moves are a little more advanced. Theatre Arts classes
seek to expose students to ways to express ideas and
emotions that they cannot normally express through
language alone.
Theatre
Arts Teens
– Lastly our most advanced class in the theatre arts
department. Our teens are required to take their
theatrical training a little more serious. Their
production is longer yet again from the Tweens class, they
more advanced music, learn more lines, and develop their
character deeper, while the dance moves are a little more
advanced. Theatre, music, dance, and, of course,
performing are the main aspects of Theatre Arts. It seeks
to expose student’s o ways to express ideas and emotions
that they cannot normally express through language alone.
The technique will be noticeably a little more difficult
then the Kids or Tweens classes.
Drama
Beginner, Intermediate and Senior-
Drama is the specific mode of fiction represented in
performance. Students are taught to not act, but react to
various positions, situations, and events. They are taught
a variety of different methods of performance such as
comedy, drama, mystery, etc. Each student will learn the
fundamentals of drama through a variety of role playing
and theatrical sports. At each level the expectations and
the development will improve and the student’s mind will
be opened to create more diverse and intricate characters.
The development of such an art form is proven to improve
self- confidence and sharpen observations of people, of
situations, and of the environment. They will learn to be
aware of how they can use their body ad voice as tools of
communication. They will give form and shape to ideas and
experiences. Through this study, students will have an
opportunity to do script works and will provide a showcase
at the year end theatre show. Drama is a very fun and an
incredible social class.
Dance
Theatre-
Students will learn songs from many popular musicals
combined with dance, choreography and characterization.
Emphasis will be spent on learning breathing and other
vocal techniques. Students will also learn the basics in
reading sheet music and memorization of lyrics. There will
be opportunity for participants to contribute and share
ideas on how a musical theatre piece could be interpreted
and choreography that would relate. This class is designed
to bring out the love of music, dance, and acting while
developing a stronger performance quality.
Ballet-
Ballet is the foundation of all dance styles. It is where
strong technique that supports all dances is taught.
Stageworks follows a syllabus that incorporates Ceccetti
and RAD Ballet syllabus. Students will be able to name the
various steps taught at each level, while learning to
freestyle with the various moves. Flexibility, pointing
toes, jumps, barre work, and movement across the floor and
in the centre will be taught and enhanced. At the start of
the year a list of technical movements and steps will be
made available and will be expected to be learned before
students will move into the next level. Each student is
assessed individually.
Pointe-
Pointe work is part of the classical ballet dancer’s
repertoire. Dancing in pointe shoes requires technique,
strength, and control; all of which are learned and
enhanced through exercises at the barre in the centre.
Dancers must have taken pre-pointe before attempting
pointe work. Stageworks reserves the right to approve all
students who are enrolling in pointe, as the dancers’
safety is paramount.
Prepointe-
Pre-pointe is the pre- requisite for pointe. Pre-pointe
training enables students to reinforce correct body
posture, develop enhanced body awareness, and gain the
strength necessary to dance safely and properly in pointe
shoes. Students must meet all of the criteria described
within Stageworks’ pointe guideline to ensure pointe
work is an appropriate goal for them to work
towards.
Jumping,
Stretching and Turning Class-
Dancers are athletes. Just like any other athlete dancers
want to excel in their sport - Art. This class is designed
not only to focus on jumps, stretching and turning, but
also to provide knowledge of proper body conditioning.
Flexibility is a key component to the longevity of all
dancers by developing long supple muscle tissue and
preventing injuries from muscle strain. Increased muscle
strength, muscle endurance and body alignment will also be
goals over the course of the year. Increased precision in
jumps and turns will allow dancers to move their technique
and skill to a more advanced level.
Ballroom
–
Ballroom dance refers to a set of partner dances, which
are enjoyed both socially and competitively around the
globe. While historically ballroom dance may refer to any
form of formal social dancing as recreation, with the
emergence of dancesport in modern times the term has
become much narrower in scope, usually referring
specifically to the International Standard and
International Latin style dances. Stageworks is going to
teach some fun ballroom dances such as Latin, Swing, and
Lindyhop.
Jazz-
The roots of jazz dance extend back to some of the
earliest African Americans who took aspects of African
dance and developed a style of movement that has evolved
into the energetic, dynamic, rhythm- based dance style.
Jazz dancers require the same type of technique, strength
and flexibility that are essential to ballet, but move in
a more free and modern way.
Tap-
A combination of Al Gilbert Syllabus along with Rhythm Tap
techniques will be used. This syllabus follows a grade
system. A portion of the class will learn syllabus work
while a portion does the syllabus work using popular
music. Students will start with a tap warm up, across the
floor and centre rhythm combos. The goal is for students
to understand tap technique, and making rhythms to the
music and without music.
Contemporary-
Not as new as one may think, modern dance has been alive
since the early 1900’s. The first of the large Modern
Dance companies in North America began in 1915, nearly 15
years prior to American Ballet companies. Contemporary
dance as it is more commonly referred to be
expressionistic in motivation and technique is based on
creative needs. Each of the great modern dance
choreographers has shaped the human body in a distinctly
personal way to frame creative ideas that they wanted to
express at the same time. This class will draw from
various styles and sources; however this is still a strong
focus on technique, a progression in the development of
skills as well as a release of creativity through
improvisation.
Hiphop
Boppers-
The Boppers is the introduction class for hiphop. Elements
of Old and New School hip hop styles are introduced while
keeping true to some basic jazz moves. Among learning the
technique of hip hop, students are encouraged to bring in
their attitudes while learning this high energy dance
form. Students are taught they key fundamentals to every
dance class- proper warm ups, hip hop technique, moving
across the floor, free styling and combinations. Students
in this level might take one to two years to learn the
technique, but then should be well on their way to Hip Hop

Hip Hop 2 continue on from the Boppers level. Classes
start with a warm up, hip hop technique, across the floor,

historical styles. Throughout the year students will learn
fun and challenging choreography to a variety of hip hop
music from old school to modern day. This will allow the
dancers to develop different dynamics to create stronger,
more interesting movement. Freestyle movement will be
explored with goal of having dancers who are confident in
front of others or in a dance circle.
Breakdanc’n
-
Break-dance, breaking, b-boying is a street dance style
that evolved as part of the hiphop movement. Break-dancing
involves the dance elements of toprock, downrock, freezes,
and power moves. Breakdanc’n is somewhere in between a
dancer and athlete due to its aggressive style and
difficult moves. We will be teaching at a basic level and
advancing students from there. This is an exciting new
class at Stageworks.
Highland-
Highland is split into two groups; a beginner and more
advanced class. Students in the beginner class will focus
on positions, steps and the introductory dance such as the
Highland Fling and the Sword Dance. Students will be
taught theory and memorize positions and steps. Theory is
based on the BATD syllabus. The advanced class will
continue to work on theory while being able to recite
their steps and positions taught in the theory section of
Highland.
Irish-
Irish dance is a popular dance form at Stageworks. After
Lord of the Dance, Irish Dance exploded into the
mainstream. People outside of the Irish Ancestry are
breaking out with excitement. Traditional Irish Dances are
learned and performed in and around St. Patrick’s Day to
a variety of different audiences. Contemporary styles are
also taught for audience pleasure. Students are first
taught soft shoes to learn the technique and only after
many hours of blood, sweat and tears the students move
onto hard shoe.

as well as increased awareness proper body alignment to
build a strong foundation for the years ahead.
Hiphop
Hurray (4 – 5 years) –
Hiphop Hurray is a new class at Stageworks. It will
combine basic hiphop/jazz moves. What separates hip hop
dance from other forms of dance is that it is often
improvisational (freestyle) in nature and hip hop dancers
frequently engage in battles—formal or informal
one-on-one dance. Stageworks will combine basic jazz moves
with hiphop for an easier approach to teaching a very
difficult dance form.
Pre
Jazz (4 – 5 years) –
Technique is the foundation for all dance movements. The
earlier a dancer learns, strengthens, and increases
flexibility the easier the difficult moves become which is
essential for leaps and turns while improving posture. In
this very beginning class of jazz, students will start to
learn very basic moves to assist them in the preceding
levels of jazz using preschool appropriate music.
Pre
tap (3 – 5 years)-
Tap dance is a form of dance in which a tapping sound is
made when metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard
surface. Because the dancers make sound, they are
considered percussion musicians. Stageworks will follow
the Al Gilbert Syllabus as well as the ADAPT Syllabus.
Students will learn basic steps for the preschool level
while introduced to fun, rhythmic dance styles.
Jazz/tap
(4 – 5 years)-
Jazz/Tap is a combination class incorporating basic jazz
discipline with Tap. Students will strengthen and
freestyle in jazz and learn rhythms and beats in tap.
Combining the two teaches how the two can work together
for performance. Students will take their learning and
move it up the next levels of both jazz and tap.
Pre
Contemporary ( 3 – 5 years) -
Unlike traditions such as ballet, contemporary dance is
not associated with specific dance techniques, but rather
with a dance philosophy. In contemporary dance, people
attempt to explore the natural energy and emotions of
their bodies to produce dances which are often very
personal. Young dancers in Contemporary will learn to take
what is a natural emotion and turn it into dance.
Creative
Movement (3 – 5 years) -
Creative movement introduces young children to music and
movement. It fosters imagination and creativity and
children are encouraged to explore movement in fun ways.
This creative movement class is the first step to
unlocking children’s imagination, taking thought and
turning it into dance through exploration of characters.
Dance

aspect of musical theatre in a fun and entertaining
setting. Throughout the year dancers will learn how to

skis. Familiar songs and repetition of exercises will be
used to increase their musicality and be active and have
fun.

in festivals or competitions. Students are taught
choreography and prepared for festivals in tap, ballet,
lyrical, jazz and hip hop. This is a serious commitment.

practice at home to attendance in their competitive
classes. Students are required to be enrolled in the style
of dance they are competing in. Strong technique is
required.
